BMW has taken the covers off the all-new long-wheelbase BMW 5 Series sedan. Recent spy pictures captured the longest 5er in typical black and white camouflage as it underwent winter testing. Those hoping to catch a cheaper 7 Series-sized Beemer had better be living in China because it was developed and built exclusively for that market at BMW Plant Shenyang.

The wheelbase is increased by 14 centimetres (5.5 inches) over the normal sedan. The extra length gives it a more slender, dynamic appearance from the C-pillar. Some exterior features include LED daytime running lights and L-shaped rear lights.

The interior can be fitted with optional items like four-zone automatic air conditioning, electrically-adjustable sun blinds and rear seat entertainment alongside standard equipment such as a unique rear seat bench and a driver-oriented cockpit with Head Up Display.

Three straight-six engines making between 150 kW (201 bhp / 204 PS), 190 kW (255 bhp / 258 PS) and 225 kW (302 bhp / 306 PS) for the 523Li, 528Li and 535Li models respectively will be available. Performance from 0 to 100km/h for each is 8.5 seconds, 7.2s and 6.1s. All are mated to a standard 8-speed automatic gearbox. Fuel-saving technologies provided by the BMW EfficientDynamics package include brake energy regeneration and on-demand control of ancillary units.
