The latest generation of BMW ActiveHybrid technology also adds precisely controlled – and therefore extremely effective – energy management to the mix. All of which gives the BMW ActiveHybrid 5 an exceptional balance of performance and fuel economy for the premium executive car class.

Its drive system generates combined output of 250 kW/340 hp, allows the car to be driven on electric power alone up to 60 km/h (37 mph), accelerates the BMW ActiveHybrid 5 from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.9 seconds, limits average fuel consumption to between 6.4 and 7.0 litres per 100 kilometres (44 – 40 mpg imp) and has CO2 emissions of just 149 – 163 grams per kilometre (figures according to EU test cycle, may vary according to the tyre format specified).

The 225 kW/306 hp six-cylinder in-line engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology in the BMW ActiveHybrid 5 is the same unit renowned for its free-revving capability, pulling power and efficiency in the BMW 535i. The electric motor, meanwhile, develops 40 kW/55 hp and is supplied with energy by a high-performance lithium-ion battery integrated into the luggage area.

The hybrid-specific safety features, which protect the lithium-ion high-voltage battery and the power electronics, are integrated in the BMW 5 Series’ elaborate integrated active and passive safety concept. In a collision, high-strength structural components and large deformation zones help to keep impact forces away from the passenger cell and also from the hybrid drive components. Other standard safety systems on the BMW ActiveHybrid 5 include front and side airbags, side curtain head airbags for both rows of seats, three-point inertia-reel belts on all seats, belt force limiters and belt latch tensioners on the front seats and ISOFIX child seat attachments in the rear.

In the BMW ActiveHybrid 5, too, the standard-fitted Driving Experience Control switch offers not only Sport+, Sport and Comfort set-ups (as well as Comfort+ mode if the optional Dynamic Damper Control is specified), but also ECO PRO mode. The latter supports a particularly relaxed and fuel-efficient driving style, and makes more frequent use of all-electric mode. As an alternative to the standard-fitted automatic transmission, a sports automatic with faster shift times is optionally available.

The folks over at Endras BMW published a story today on a mysterious BMW dealership in Oakville, Ontario. The story of the ghost BMW dealership starts in 1988 when the company operating under the name “Citation Motors” had its license revoked before moving to Toronto and operating under the “Downtown BMW” name.

Interesting enough is the fact that the owner only sold off the name and operating license rather than the physical space and inventory. 23 years later and the showroom seems frozen in time with two BMW models in mint condition. In the typical 1980′s showroom interior furnishings, architecture, and design, BMW aficionados will notice a classy E28 5 Series and 635 CSI with beautiful BBS wheels.

The 6 Series has very low mileage, but most likely with some damaged caused by time.Around the back you’ll find the shop, packed with BMWs, from a mint dark blue 635csi, to a 1984 733i, a dolphin blue E21 or 2002, and another 635csi.

Win A Trip To Cape Canaveral With MINI’s 10th Birthday Celebrations

BMW MINI
BMW MINI
MINI marks a decade of fun and stylish motoring with a launch into space and the chance to win a trip of a life time. Over a third of a million Brits have bought one, they’ve clocked up an estimated 15 billion miles on UK roads and have driven enough miles to go around the world 600,000 times or take 33,000 return journeys to the moon and back.
.
In the summer of 2001 the very first BMW built MINI rolled off of the production line in Oxford, 10 years later MINI is celebrating a decade of motoring by taking its owners on a virtual trip into space.

MINI is inviting its owners and enthusiasts to log the details of their car into a virtual space world called ‘MINI Lunatics’ (www.mini.co.uk/lunatics). Using the car’s mileage, their MINI will be blasted into the depths of virtual space before being docked in the MINI space station.

Exclusive prizes are available for lucky owners who randomly dock in a part of the MINI space station where a prize is hidden. A trip for four to Cape Canaveral is also up for grabs for any ‘MINI Lunatics’ who find seven hidden words which have been carefully placed around the site. Users can enter the prize draw by clicking on the moon.

Extra special prizes are also up for grabs for drivers who have driven the equivalent distance to the moon. Drivers with 252,000 miles or more can register their MINI’s details to be in with a chance of winning special limited edition MINI memorabilia.

The folks over at Autogespot are bringing us a new video of the BMW 1M in the equally beautiful Valencia Orange.

The new 1 Series M Coupe continues to remain a rarity on U.S. roads with just a few hundred units delivered to customers so far with the demand remaining high. In the United States, the 1M has a base price of $47,010, including destination charges. As on all the other markets, BMW offers the 1M in three colors: Valencia Orange Metallic, Alpine White and Sapphire Black Metallic.

The 1M comes equipped with a BMW M-power twin turbo inline six-cylinder engine rated at 335 HP at 5900 RPM and 332 lb-ft of torque from 1500 to 4500 RPM. An additional 37 lb-ft of torque is available in temporary ‘overboost’ mode whilst under full load.

The fellas at GT Spirit got their hands on the BMW 650i Convertible by AC Schnitzer. The popular German tuner is known for its BMW programs, both in the visual and power departments. Let’s have a look at some key points from their extensive review.

The complete program for the BMW F12 6-Series Convertible and Coupe includes a wide variety of parts. From exterior to interior trims and from an slip-on exhaust system to a multipiece wheel set, all available parts were outfitted to the luxury roadster shown here.

AC Schnitzer is still working on a performance package for the 650i. The power increase will be similar to the BMW F10 550i upgrade. To be on the safe side, they prefer not to extract the maximum possible power but instead ensure greater robustness, which means a longer life of the engine. Unfortunately, both upgrades are not yet available. Official figures will be released in September.

The sound track of the bimmer’s exhaust system is enhanced using a twin sports rear silencer with chromed “Sports Trim” tailpipe trims in left/right combination. The sound production is quite different from the stock system. Overall, it adds a deeper, sonorous and more sportier sound track. The new exhaust tune is accompanied by an easily noticeable and darker burble whenever the automatic shifts.

BMW i8
The BMW i8 Concept is the next step in the evolution of the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics Concept. The result: The most progressive and innovative sports car of its time. Its innovative plug-in hybrid concept combines the modified electric drive system from the BMW i3 Concept – fitted over its front axle – with a high-performance three-cylinder combustion engine producing 164 kW/220 hp and 300 Nm (221 lb-ft) at the rear. Working in tandem, they allow the two drive systems to display their respective talents to the full, delivering the performance of a sports car but the fuel consumption of a small car.

Acceleration of 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in under five seconds combined with fuel consumption in the European cycle of under three litres per 100 kilometres (approx. 94 mpg imp) are figures currently beyond the capability of any vehicle powered by a combustion engine of comparable performance. Thanks to its large lithium-ion battery, which can be charged from a domestic power supply, the BMW i8 Concept can travel up to 35 kilometres (approx. 20 miles) on electric power alone. Added to which, the 2+2-seater offers enough space for four people, giving it a high level of everyday practicality.

The hybrid concept means that the BMW i8 Concept can also run purely on electric power. The energy supplied by the application-designed battery system installed between the front and rear axle modules to the electric motor at the front axle gives the BMW i8 Concept an all-electric driving range of approximately 35 kilometres (20 miles). The battery can be fully recharged in two hours at a standard power socket.

BMW i8 Concept can be driven at the same time, similarly to an all-wheel-drive vehicle. This solution combines the advantages of front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive to ensure the optimal dynamic drive configuration as required. Depending on traction conditions and driving situation, intelligent dynamic driving systems ensure maximum energy recuperation without compromising dynamics and stability. This allows very high levels of energy recuperation even in the wet or in snow.

The BMW i3 Concept is an uncompromisingly sustainable vehicle designed for urban areas. Driven purely by electric power and purpose-built to meet the demands of sustainable and emission-free mobility, it embodies an intelligent form of urban transportation and commuting. The BMW i3 is a well-resolved all-round concept, with every detail conceived and optimised to fulfil its eventual purpose. Its innovative LifeDrive architecture renders the BMW i3 Concept light, safe, spacious and dynamic. Innovative use of materials and intelligent lightweight design, moreover, not only enable the i3 Concept to travel long distances on a single charge and provide superb safety in the event of a collision, they also help give the car its excellent driving dynamics.

The electric motor over the rear axle – which generates output of 125 kW/170 hp and impressive torque of 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) from a standstill – and a small turning circle combine to deliver pleasingly crisp driving characteristics. The BMW i3 Concept accelerates from 0 to 60 km/h (37 mph) in under four seconds and from rest to 100 km/h (62 mph) in less than eight seconds.

The version of the LifeDrive architecture that underlies the BMW i3 Concept opens up totally new avenues in interior design. There is no centre tunnel bisecting the cabin, and the interior thus creates a very free, open and airy impression. The passengers sit in a raised “semi-command” position which provides a good view over the hustle and bustle of city traffic and, at the same time, eases access to the seats.

On another level, the highly technical-looking display graphics of the instrument cluster and CID lend visual form to the BMW i3 Concept’s electric drive philosophy. All the information is displayed in the high quality and visually appealing fashion you would expect from BMW. Although the relationship of the i3 Concept to the parent brand is clearly evident again here, a very distinctive graphics profile has been created for BMW i with the emphasis on an individual and minimalist approach.

“BMW No. 3 Brand in the World”

Brand in the World
“BMW No. 3 Brand in the World”
RankingTheBrands, a marketing agency that publishes yearly Top 100 lists, says in 2011, BMW is ranked as third most popular brand in the world. The Ranking the Brands top 100 ranking is compiled on the basis of all the rankings included in Rankingthebrands.com. The position of a brand in this list is determined by the number of rankings in which it appears, and takes into account its position in each ranking.

The top brand in the world, as expected, is Apple, the second largest company in terms of revenue and most likely number one in the near future. Following Apple is the Mountain View-based Google, one of the most respected technology companies.

From the automotive world, the only company present in top 10 is Mercedes-Benz. The fast-growing Audi comes on the 11th spot, a major improve over the last 25th ranking.

The X1 20d's 2.0-litre turbo diesel is the same unit found in the best-selling X3 model, though here the engine seems noisier than we recall. A shortage of sound-deadening material between the engine bay and cabin could be responsible.

The strength and smoothness of the 2.0L diesel argue a case against the more expensive twin-turbo diesel 2.3d. Performance is more than sufficient. It's also frugal, with an official 5.8 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres (6.2 auto). Our consumption never registered above 8.0L/100km during both urban and country testing.

Standard equipment is respectable, though, and includes 17-inch alloys, cruise control, rear parking sensors, hill descent control, foglights, rain-sensing wipers, roof rails, climate control, leather steering wheel, Bluetooth, trip computer, six airbags and stability control.

Rear-drive versions will offer the cheapest seats (from $43,500) for the X1 from June but in the meantime, the 4WD range kicks off with the model we tested - the $52,700 xDrive20d manual. That's pricey by compact-SUV standards, though comparable with the closest the segment has had yet to a luxury model, the slightly bigger Land Rover Freelander 2. It's also noticeably cheaper than a 3-Series wagon with which (despite the X1 badge) it shares its platform.

The opportunity to unleash the latest rendition of the 1 series. We were given the keys to a 6-speed manual 118i which is curiously named, and in actual fact sports a 1.6 liter under-hood. The track layout was short and twisty, a tire melter that requires high levels of agility. For a full track report on the car’s dynamics, read on…

Sitting track-side the new 1 series looks the part, with flared wheel arches filled by 17 inch lightweight alloys wrapped in sticky Pirelli rubber. The longitudinal prominence in the hood suggests a lion’s heart lies beneath – and while it is admittedly tiny, it’s still a relative beast (think crazed rabid squirrel with really big teeth). First things first – let’s get rid of the electronic nannies grannies and get a proper feel for the chassis towards the limit.

Up through the gears and the 1.6 keeps pulling. Okay, so it doesn’t snap your neck back – but it does give your neck a work out. As you come upon the turbo boost, strong thrust is felt from your stomach – this is the stuff we lust for, the reason we buy BMWs. Their engines – apparently of any size – are magical. While our track had very short straights and we could not reach high speeds, on the autobahn we were two breaths away from 230 km/h. Leafing through the official press release, BMW claims a top speed of 225, so either I had a strong back wind in my favor (the road was level, not downhill) or they have slightly more juice in the package than they admit. It wouldn’t be the first time – and this fresh engine wasn’t even broken in; expect slight power increases once the surfaces machine into each other, as with any properly broken in internal-combustion engine. BMW claims 170 hp at 4,800 rpm and 184 lb ft of torque from 1,500 rpm to 4,500 rpm. Factory 0-60 time stands at 7.4 seconds, but we suspect some of the magazines may get it there slightly quicker.

The camouflage level remains the same as recent M6 convertible mules, with the front and rear fascia still mostly masked, but, as we've discussed previously -- the details on the rear bumper can be made out through the tape, and appears to follow the current M trademark design, which is similar to the rear bumper on the 1M and X3 M Sport. It is still not known if the centerpiece would be black as on the 1M or painted as on the M5.

Power will come via the S63Tu Twin Turbo 4.4L V8 that powers that F10 M5 which is good for 560HP and 501ft-lb of torque. Expect to see the car revealed in full sometime in calendar year 2012.
